Discover 23 West Coffee

Nestled in the heart of Webster Groves, 23 West Coffee at 23 W Lockwood Ave, Webster Groves, MO 63119, United States, is more than just a neighborhood coffee spot-it’s the kind of place that feels like home the moment you step inside. The first time I visited, the scent of freshly ground beans and warm pastries immediately drew me in. You can tell the baristas take pride in every cup, from their rich espresso shots to their perfectly frothed cappuccinos.

One of the most memorable parts of my visit was trying their seasonal latte, a creamy pumpkin spice creation made with locally sourced milk. It wasn’t overly sweet, which I appreciated, and it had that perfect balance of warmth and spice that instantly reminded me of cozy fall mornings. A friend of mine, a self-proclaimed coffee purist, swears by their pour-over-smooth, strong, and with just enough acidity to make the flavors dance on your palate. According to the Specialty Coffee Association, freshness and grind consistency are two of the top factors that affect coffee flavor, and 23 West Coffee seems to have mastered both.

The atmosphere inside is calm but alive. Large windows invite natural light to pour in, bouncing off rustic wooden tables and minimalist decor. The vibe is ideal for working remotely or meeting up with a friend to catch up. I’ve personally spent a few hours there writing and people-watching, occasionally glancing up to see locals chatting over scones or students buried in textbooks. For those who enjoy exploring, Webster Groves itself is known for its historic charm and walkable streets, so stopping by after a stroll through the neighborhood feels almost inevitable.

Their menu offers more than just coffee. From buttery croissants and avocado toast to hearty breakfast sandwiches, everything tastes fresh and made with care. I noticed a growing number of diners opting for their plant-based options, like the oat milk latte or the vegan banana bread, which shows how they’re keeping up with modern food trends while staying true to their roots. In fact, according to a 2024 Statista report, over 65% of U.S. coffee drinkers now prefer cafes that provide dairy alternatives and sustainable packaging-something 23 West Coffee clearly understands.

When it comes to customer experience, reviews consistently praise the friendly staff and the attention to detail in every drink. Online platforms like Yelp and Google Reviews highlight consistent five-star ratings for their signature espresso blend and pastries baked daily. I even had a brief chat with one of the baristas who mentioned they rotate beans from regional roasters every few months to keep the flavors evolving. This level of care and transparency builds trust-a crucial ingredient for any successful local diner or coffee shop.

Beyond the food and drink, what makes this spot stand out is the sense of community it fosters. It’s common to see local artists displaying their work on the walls or small events like acoustic nights taking place in the corner of the café. The owner once mentioned in an interview with the Webster Groves Chronicle that the goal was to make the shop “a place where people slow down and connect.” And that’s exactly what happens. You’ll often see people greeting each other by name, a sign of how integral the café has become to the neighborhood’s daily rhythm.

From my own experiences and observations, 23 West Coffee isn’t trying to be the next big chain-it’s focused on quality, consistency, and connection. The service feels personal, the flavors are thoughtfully curated, and every visit leaves you with the impression that the people behind the counter genuinely care. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast, a student looking for a quiet corner, or a traveler exploring the charm of Webster Groves, this café delivers an experience that lingers long after the last sip.

  • We actually ate lunch nearby when I stumbled across this place. I got an ube latte, which was a seasonal flavor. The latte was completely filled to the top, which is rare to find. There is a variety of seating options both indoors and outdoors. Indoor tables have outlets on top for easy phone charging or working remotely. I look forward to stopping in again!

  • All the drinks here are so good! It’s my second time here and the espresso is just as good as the first time! If you like traditional espresso drinks this is the place for you. Their espresso tonics are amazing too! I haven’t tried any sweet drinks but based off what I’ve tried those must be amazing too. I’ve been trying to find a coffee shop with delicious espresso closer to my house and I finally found it!

  • First time at 23 West! I can confidently say I’ll be coming back :) This place has been on my list for a while. My friend put me on the STL Coffee Passport and once I saw this shop was on the list I thought I’d give it a try. I was greeted by a barista who shares the same name as me! Honestly, in addition to the great seasonal flavors and customizations for the coffee, it made my day. To drink, I’ve been sipping on the orange blossom latte with ube foam. This was a bit of a custom ask but as it’s seasonal, I wanted to take advantage of all the flavors! It came out beautifully and tastes like a sweet and savory summer. To eat, I’ve been enjoying the blueberry muffin. I think I detect a bit of lemon! It’s so good :) Rating this place a 5/5 because the vibes are amazing, it’s remote worker friendly, the menu is massive, and the staff is so helpful and friendly. Definitely surpassed my expectations :)

  • Very sleek modern brand new coffee shop in the heart of Webster. The lattes were good and the service was very good despite a lot of customers. Pretty standard selection of coffee drinks, but nothing that wows you yet. Several tables and places to sit and enjoy. Parking lot in back but shared with other businesses.

  • The workers were so sweet and extremely helpful! It was our first visit so we had a few questions about their food/drinks offered and especially with their menu down in store we were so thankful the lady behind the counter was patient and thorough with her descriptions and seemed truly happy to help! During our visit I witnessed the staff going above and beyond for the patrons from holding the door for them to serving them items outdoors that are technically self serve inside. It was amazing to see and made me want to come back just for the friendliness of the staff! Aside from the staff, the coffee and food were wonderful! They have a pretty standard coffee menu with a few seasonal options and use special beans that make the drinks rich and delicious! My partner and I both got a mocha, his iced and mine hot and I requested the stencil on top! I'd seen the coffees online with the logo and couldn't wait to try it! Their mocha lattes are coffee forward with robust flavor and a rich chocolate finish that isn't too sweet but still tasty. We also enjoyed an oatmeal bar which was like a fancy granola bar but soft and chewy with a fruit jam filling. It was well worth the money and we will definitely be back! The store was quiet for a late Sunday morning and we loved the jams that played including "Hey Now" from the Lizzie Mcguire movie

  • I’ve now been 10 times or so. Usually get a pour over. But I’ve had the occasional oat milk cappuccino. My first trip was day one and have kept going since. They’re processed have improved and seem to handle crowds well. I’m a pour over guy and won’t review a coffee shop unless they do this, whether manual or with a machine. I prefer manual but understand the labor and time challenges. I was told that they can do it manual if the traffic flow isn’t crazy. Which I can respect. They usually have a pretty good selection to choose from for PO and that is great. I appreciate that the barista will talk with me about the PO technique and their love of coffee. I’ve tried a cookie once and it was good. I wish them well and am thankful they’re here. Just went in on Labor Day, 2025 and they were slammed (1240pm) but as usual provided great service. Thank you for that team that was working today.
